Quand un enfant peut-il dormir dans un lit mezzanine ? 7 points importants que les parents devraient vérifier d’abord
Le fait d’avoir six ans signifie-t-il automatiquement qu’un enfant est prêt pour un lit mezzanine ?
A sixth birthday does not mean a child can suddenly sleep safely in a loft bed overnight. The age of six is an important safety threshold, but it should be considered a starting point rather than the only criterion.
Children develop differently. One six-year-old remembers to use only the ladder to get out of bed, even at night. Another wakes up drowsy, acts impulsively or quickly forgets the agreed rules while playing.
Before the first night upstairs, it is therefore worth considering both the child’s age and, above all, their behaviour. Do they climb up and down the ladder safely and calmly? Can they do so independently? Do they follow the rules even when tired? Do they understand that the upper sleeping area is not a place for jumping or climbing on the safety rail?
Six is an important threshold. However, a child is truly ready to sleep upstairs only when their age, individual maturity and a properly prepared bed all come together.
For the IKEA KURA in its loft-bed position, the recommendation is to use the upper sleeping area only from the age of six. Neither an additional safety rail nor a particularly independent child changes this age recommendation. What parents can do is prepare the sleeping space as carefully as possible and add extra protection for a child who is already ready for a loft bed.
Au-delà de l’âge : 7 points que les parents devraient vérifier avant la première nuit en hauteur
Six is the starting point. Before a child spends their first full night in the upper sleeping area, it is worth taking a closer look at some everyday situations. These often reveal more about a child’s readiness for a loft bed than age alone.
1. Does the child use the ladder safely?
They should be able to climb up and down independently, calmly and without help — without jumping or skipping rungs.
2. What happens when the child wakes up at night?
This point is particularly important. A drowsy child may behave very differently from how they do during the day. If they regularly get up at night, they should be able to find the access opening and use the ladder safely even when half asleep.
3. Do they follow the rules while playing?
The upper sleeping area should not be used for jumping, rough play or climbing on the safety rail.
4. Can the child judge height and risk?
They should understand that something that would be harmless play at floor level can become dangerous at a height.
5. Is the route to the ladder clear?
Cushions, bedding and toys should not block access to the opening — especially at night.
6. Is the mattress the correct thickness?
What matters is both the height of the safety rail and, above all, how much protection actually remains above the top of the mattress. The thicker the mattress, the lower the effective height of the safety rail.
7. Are the areas where falls could actually occur protected?
Look at the bed from your child’s perspective: the long side, the short side and the area around the access opening. Having a safety rail does not automatically mean that every potential danger point is equally well protected.
A safe loft bed depends on several elements working together: the child’s maturity, a suitable mattress, safe access and a well-prepared sleeping space.
Six is the age threshold — but safety starts with proper preparation, not with a birthday
Comment renforcer la protection d’un lit mezzanine ?
Even when a child is old enough and ready for a loft bed, proper protection remains essential. It is particularly important to consider whether a safety rail is fitted and how far it actually extends above the mattress.
Pay attention to mattress thickness
A thicker mattress automatically reduces the effective height of the existing safety rail. The mattress should therefore always meet the bed manufacturer’s specifications.
Assess the safety rail from mattress level
What matters is the distance between the top of the mattress and the top of the rail — this is the section that protects the child while sleeping.
Additional protection for the IKEA KURA
For parents who want to add extra protection to the upper sleeping area of their IKEA KURA, our safety rail models provide an additional 30 cm of height. They supplement the existing bed frame and raise the sides of the sleeping area.
Consider the access opening too
The area by the ladder must remain accessible, but it should also be deliberately included in the safety arrangements. Additional handholds can give the child more places to grip securely when climbing in and out.
Important: An additional safety rail does not change the manufacturer’s age recommendation. For the IKEA KURA used as a loft bed, the recommendation remains ages 6 and above.
The higher the mattress sits, the more important the question becomes: How much safety rail actually remains above the child?
Frequently asked questions
At what age can a child sleep in a loft bed?
As a general rule, the upper sleeping area of a loft bed is not intended for children under six. For the IKEA KURA, the manufacturer also recommends using it as a loft bed from the age of six. Parents should additionally consider whether their child uses the ladder safely, understands the rules and can reliably find their way around at night.
Is being six years old enough on its own?
Non. Age is an important threshold, but it is not the only criterion. Physical coordination, individual behaviour, waking during the night and a responsible approach to height also play an important role.
Why is mattress thickness so important in a loft bed?
The thicker the mattress, the less safety rail remains above its top surface. The mattress thickness approved by the manufacturer should therefore always be observed.
Can an additional safety rail make the IKEA KURA safer?
An additional safety rail can raise the sides of the upper sleeping area. I LOVE KURA safety rail models add an extra 30 cm of height to the existing structure. However, this does not change the bed manufacturer’s age recommendation.
Good to know
For a loft bed, the overall height of the safety rail is only part of the picture. What matters is how much of it actually remains above the top of the mattress to provide protection.
Always measure from where your child actually sleeps — from the top of the mattress.
Our recommendation
Check the loft bed regularly after assembly. Children grow, mattresses are replaced and habits change.
Regularly inspect the safety rails, mattress thickness, ladder, access opening and all fixings. This helps a well-prepared sleeping space remain safe over time.
